Default Tweeter for Lowther

Hi

I'm planning to cut off the whizzercone of my Lowther PM6a and finding a substitute tweeter.

The Lowthers are running in an open baffle with a Morel UW1258 in a sealed box crossed at 400 Hz.

Any recommendations for a tweeter to mate with Lowthers?

I have been thinking of finding a pair of TAD TD-2001, but i don't know how well they would integrate.

Thanks,
Jeppe

sell the Lowthers before you butcher them, buy something else, dedicated as midrange, pair it with nice ribbon and you are in heaven
just a suggestion

Tommy Horning produces loudspeakers using a whizzerless Lowther driver as the midrange. I've never heard them, but they've gotten good reviews. Older models used old Jensen RP horn tweeters, I believe. Not sure about the new ones - it's horn, but don't know who's.

If you can't stand the Lowther "shout," this might be worth doing. If you do, it'd be nice to see "before" and "after" frequency response plots.

Thanks for the replys!

The Morel integrates quite well with the Lowthers.

The Lowthers have a damaged whizzercone and that is why i want to remove it. Lowther offers world-class midrange and I don't want another driver.

I have heard the Hørnings many times and it is astonishing.

Do you think that the TAD would integrate well?

If you can afford it, try the RAAL ribbon, which works down to 2~3 kHz. It's an astonishing combination with the Lowther - I heard the RAAL dipole combined with a Lowther at the 2010 RMAF, and it's the best I've ever heard a Lowther sound.

I absolutely agreed with adason once you have a ribbon there is no need for full range driver. I would go for Orca Raven or Pioneer instead of RAAL however.
Bohlender Graebener & Great Heil Air-Motion Transformer have nice reviews check parts-express.

Currently I do have Fostex T500AmkII crossed over by Deulund Coherent Audio 1uF (capacitor is great) and not very happy. I would say this tweeter needs steeper active crossover and dedicated amp therefore.

You did not mention that before, in that case you have very little change to sell it properly, go ahead and remove it. Frequency response measurement before and after would be a great thing to have.

The RAALs look quite promising, exept the lower sensitivity of 95 dB/W. I need to find a place where I can hear them, before spending 1400$ (Price in Denmark).

At that price i'm reaching TAD territory(2nd hand). What would be best? I love the sound of TAD, but i'm not quite sure about using them with Lowther.

Sorry for not mentioning the damaged whizzer.

I'll try to get some measurements, if i decide to cut the whizzer of.

Thanks,
Jeppe
