Glad to hear that you have mains power experience, and hopefully a healthy respect for the damage it can cause. I think Andrew is just expressing concern for your safety. There are a lot of people who come here and seem to know nothing, and we fear for their safety if they work with mains power.

So, are you planning an active crossover or passive? If active, are you interested in DIY analog, DIY DSP or a commercial crossover? Do you have measurement gear (a calibrated microphone and a preamp)? What are your goals for this system?

I just noticed your comment about winding inductors. Google inductor calculator, there are a few references that will help you figure out what you need to do. There are also a couple threads here about DIY inductors, IIRC. Do you have a source for 14 ga. magnet wire? for a couple pieces it will probably be about the same cost to purchase and wind your own.

It seems to me that Viki-v2 has too many projects in mind - classic 'eyes too big for stomach' approach.
My advice is to pick one - do it, finish it, then move on to the next project. You will learn a lot and folks here will be happy to help if they see you are actually doing something.

Arrow To viki_v2: optimum crossover design

Check this link for proper way to implement active (or passive) crossover :

http://www.auratronsystems.com

Then click "3PX8" "Design Philosophy".

This is a user-friendly explanation of factors you should consider.

Alex, you are starting to sound like you are shilling for auratron. As discussed in Charlie's thread there's a bunch of options and all engineering involves tradeoffs. That is one design philosophy but there are other equally valid philosophies. Each designer will choose his or her own priorities and design accordingly.

Viki - are those your measurements? I would have expected to see a larger bobble in the impedance curve at 2KHz where that response glitch is. How does your tweeter do down low? With woofer response like that, I'd try to cross as close to 1Khz as your tweeter will allow. You'll probably want a high order filter - like a Cauer with at least an 8th order initial roll off to protect the tweeter crossing low. That would also work well on the low pass to push down the woofer anomalies above 1500 Hz. Realistically, that woofer is begging to be part of a three way system.

Exactly. Nice 2" dome midrange should rescue this to a nice 3-way.

No more than you are for Linkwitz-Riley. I chose Auratron (there are others) because I have first-hand experience with their product and have found that their succinct analysis might be easier for non-technical people the understand. Also, citing a maufacturer that has adopted my philosophy adds credibility to my opinions. I hope to continue promoting the advantages of my philosophy in discussions where it has been overlooked or ignored because no one else is, but will henceforth not mention any established business. (I understand the sense of impropriety it portrays.)
What is the point of a person's fruitfull experiences if they cannot be shared with others?
