Default my speaker gurus

i am serious about building a set of speakers to last for long time. i have tried
sealed, reflex, blh tqwt etc. for last 15 years.

Planning to take horn route, 2 way is preferred. Need your advice on the following:

-my room is 24'X15' half i use for listening half is dining so listening area is 12'x15' - speakers will sit against 12' wall with no or 1''-3'' gap- question is which will be better for bass duty -LA SCALA (bass section only) or PETITE ONKEN or ALTEC 816. I will make the bass boxes myself.

-affordable compression driver for 500hz-16000hz duty and their suitable wood horn. I will craft the horn myself with friend's help.

-i believe in kiss and need your suggestion on simple tube friendly crossover. i like to drive the speaker with my home brew 300bse with 5 watt output 2.2 ohm zo.

Appreciate your help / advice / guidance - I live in Bangladesh and I will have to import the components - so there is little room for errors.

Best Regards

The La Scala will certainly have more and lower bass output than the Petit Onken.
Not sure of your budget, but for a compression driver that will really do 500-16K you'll be looking at 1.4", maybe 2". It won't be cheap.

Hi Pano

I appreciate your input. May I place the la scala bass bin against back wall (without gap)? My budget for Com driver is $300-500 - which one to cover 500hz-16000hz! Need your suggestion for diy wood horn for them.

Any thought for crossover setup?

Best regards

I did some backloaded horn 2 way constructions
Project presentation Horn Almighty but below 50Hz it is a real problem.

Onken is a possibility.

I would advise two 98db 15-18" drivers in a bass-reflex to have good bass and 101db sensitively. bas-reflex Is the only way to have compact sub-bas.

Now I listen to about 92dB 1Wmtr, 2 way with horn is very nice because it supports sub-bas down to (20) 30Hz that I do miss at higher sensitivity.

Or use 2 15"hifi woofers BR of 93 dB and come down to 30hz wit 96db 1Wmtr.

Dear Helmuth, frequency below 40hz is not my goal. I like paper woofer only TAD 1601, ALTEC 515 JBL 2505 etc. Thanks for your valuable input. Your almighty project is very impressive.

Regards

Do you want to go into the corners, or just flat against the wall?
Also, you mentioned 16" woofers like the 1601 and the 515. How about the regular size Onken box with the 416 instead of the petit?

For your compression driver there are a lot out there, including the new Altec 288 made by Great Plains Audio. Have a look at manufacturers like Eighteen Sound, Beyma, Faital Pro and B&C.
Obviously you will have to judge local costs vs shipping and import fees.

I'd stay away from that BMS diffraction horn. There are other, smoother horns on the market. Or make your own.
