Default The enclosure of midrange driver

Generally , we use closed box for a independent enclosure for midrange driver.

But I found that Sony SS-AR loudspeaker using scanspeak drivers has a hole in the back of the enclosure of the midrange. (In back of the tweeter actually)

Click the image to open in full size.

It seems no to be as a vented box just for air balance or something... Can anyone tell me the concept or theory about it? Thanks a lot.

Google "Aperiodic Vents" They relieve air pressure inside the box via resistance
