Hi there,
I am trying to 'refresh' my AR speakers, I have a bunch of them from the M series, these are the M2's. They just don't seem to shine the way they used to...but maybe that's just me. Nevertheless, I thought that perhaps the capacitor on the crossover might need a replacing so I opened it up to check it out and this photo is all she's got. Anyone know anything about this type of capacitor? Do you think it might degrade enough to change the acoustic characteristics of the speaker over time? Thanks in advance! |

That looks like a metallised polypropylene cap (MKP).
Should last forever (almost) and not need replacing. You can upgrade by using some modern poly caps like Mundorf or Solen but then they may be too large to fit the back of the terminal cup.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm not concerned about the fit if I do an upgrade as I can make it work. But, do you think there will be any noticeable difference in sound (better) by updating these caps? If it is a definite yes, then I'll go ahead and do it....but if it is a long debatable maybe, then perhaps I'll pass. Thanks again! |
