Anybody used the ATC mid-bass drivers in a project? I have a pair of SCM-7's that i think could be improved. The x-over is around 2.8Khz (iirc) and the tweeter is the D26N55-06 (i think) which tends to get good reviews, but i think it can be improved on. Would crossover tweaking/upgrading help or just starting again with a better tweeter?
Bass and midrange are really good, but they can be a little to hard and splashy in the treble, maybe a slightly smoother and more refined tweeter would be better. Was thinking of something along the lines of the old Morel MDT-33 or the larger domes recently tested- Large domes Some links to related measurements/info - (SCM-11's and 20SL's) http://www.mhennessy1.f9.co.uk/atc/index.htm http://www.stereophile.com/content/a...r-measurements Thanks, Rob Last edited by inrank; 29th December 2010 at 04:04 PM. |

Hi,
Other than some mild crossover tweaking, e.g. tweeter levels I'd leave them well alone, I think for doing it differently you should really start from scratch, and accept the ATC's as they "are what they are". As used it may be very hard to effectively improve the tweeter. rgds, sreten.

Hi Rob
According to your description, it is not the tweeter the problem, it's the crossover. The crossover point seems good but the slopes are not steeper enough. The sound of the tweeter or the woofer could be hard because some undesirable frequencies are not carefully suppress. I suppose the woofer doesn't have resonance peak. Can you get the xover schema ? The tweeter could be 18/24 dB electrical instead 12dB for example I love the sound of the ATC SCM20. rgds |

Thanks, i really like what the SCM7's do (in the bass attack, punch and dynamics. And the midrange lack of colouration) but its just the treble can become peaky at higher volumes and slightly bright.

Hi, "peaky" may be clipping, for bright reduce the tweeter level somewhat, rgds, sreten.

Cheers, if i were to start again, any particular kit that would give me the blend of tight controled bass, stable midrange but with slightly sweeter high's. Room is only around 9ft square, and all types of music. I do like to listen loudly at times, so anything that can keep up the the SCM-7's would be adequate.
