The W3-871S as the W3-879S,W3-881S to name a few are not on the TB site.
TB only posts a handfull of drivers out of a catalog of hunderds of drivers they make.
The W3-593S was made into a round frame and the W3-871S was born.
Same as the W3-594S was made into a round frame and the W3-879S was born.

So you will not likely see them on the TB site as these models were made for PE and other companys specificaly.

The 871S is by far the best 3" at this time open to the DIY.
TB makes lots of them just look on line.A lot more just added this month.
Not available at Nuera or PE.Just models they make.

The extention of the upper end of the 871S just knocks out all the other TB 3" by miles.
As well as the off axis responce.
Brian was making his Micros using the TB W3-879S as he can get them from TB.
After a phone call to him he placed a order for 2.Well look at his site now.
My little 3" just making Nuera money:bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling: :bawling:

I have just finished the Super ELF and the winner of the CSS name contest will be getting them soon.Bob just picked them up today for shipping.
The Spires as well uses the 871S in the high end.
No tweeter in this line.
And it is miles above a tweeter in the off axis responce for the cost.
-3db at 30dgrss off axis.Find a tweeter that does the same for the cost of the 871.

Anyway in both of these as well as the 2.0 which is coming out that uses the CSS 6" driver all use the 871S as a tweeter for the main reason of on and off axis response .
Stellar little drivers.
All have to do with the cone angle,Spyder,Phase plug lenght and shape.
All of these are different over the W3-879S from PE.

More on the 871s

I was googling for more project references for these drivers and I ran across this site. At the end the author talks about the drivers being destroyed by 2 watts and the need of a notch filter for a midrange bump. He also refers to a problem with Vented designs and this driver.

Have others found these things to be problematic with these drivers? I am considering a vented .2 cu ft vented design.

TIA,
Gregory

Well I am a little more into the TB line than most.Just a little.
The W3-871S can alway use this or that as the same with any driver.
But simple constuction and porting is NOT a problem.
Use them out of the box and see yourself.
The filters always will help in some point or another.
But have testing all the 3" drivers on the market at this time. The 871S is the best and easy to use.

I suspect my TB 3" give the 871s a run :) ... but they are kinda rare

i'll have a pe of 871s next week to compare.

Below in the temporay plexi open baffle (better pics when i get a chance for them to be the actual subject)... the baffles were a loon each. Got them hooked up to-nite with my $5 Axiom passive sub.

RAW,

What other 3" drivers have you compared the w871s to?

Thanks,
Ray.

W3-532S
W3-881S
W3-593S
W3-871S
W3-594S
W3-879S
W3-517S
W3-319
W3-319S
W3-319S1
W3-315
W3-315S
W3-316

All the FA and FM modles that Nuera has on hand and did.

The 871S is by far the best out all of these.

I have not but I have a few well known people that have.
Bob Wright and Bob Koonce.

Tested every 3" driver from Audax to Vifa
And they were stunned to say the least at the output of the 871S.
Only compliant.NO BASS.
But above a bass point.
Quote.
Unbelieveable 3" drivers

I just finished my w3-871 project for my surround speakers... they seem to integrate fine with my Adire Kit281s, but my complaint is that they are just not very loud. Running them by themselves they need a lot of power to do anything, and there is no bass. I want to build a set for my computer speakers, but they don't have the bottom that I need.... anyone recommend a kickin and cheap sub project for me?

rob.
