Hello to all tannoy builders,
will a Tannoy 3836 DC (qes=0.5, qms=2, vas=430l) work in GRF rectangular BLH or is this horn only suitable for the old, low q dual concentrics drivers? Has anyone else tried this? Many Thanks, Volker |

You could try joining the Tannoy Yahoo group, they might be able to help.

Hi,
a dual concentric Tannoy with a Qes=0.5? That sounds impossible.

Tannoy states a Qts of 0.427 for the 3836.

It was used in the CPA 15 speaker. It is similar to the 3833 used in the 15DMT and 215DMT I think.

That makes some sense.
Tannoy have adjusted the Qts to ~0.4 to allow optimum size vs bass extension in a vented cabinet. I like the way they specify a suitable amplifier for this 8ohm speaker. Use 300W into 4ohm amplifier. Tannoy obviously realise that current capability means a lot for clean transient reproduction.

Tannoys are famous current hogs, even the fairly efficient 215DMT (101dB @ 2.83V) sound best when driven by a big SS amp with a high DF.
I think the data they give is quite exemplary with dispersion patterns and, the rarest of things, actual distortion figures. Talking dispersion, that is one of the few differences between their pa type drivers like this one and domestic or studio drivers. The pa ones use a 60deg tweet and the others a 90deg one. If I am not mistaken these drivers could be reconed to 3833 spec by Lockwood Audio. |
