Yeah, I know, buy new surrounds in a kit and replace. Here's the deal, I just picked up a pair of Infinity SM-85 bookshelf speakers for $60. The foam surrounds on the 8" woofers have a few small holes and tears, but are otherwise okay. I'd rather just patch them up somehow rather than spring for new ones and go through the whole process, at least right now. So any advice on how to do that on the cheap?

The major problem with replacing surrounds is that its nearly impossible to have the viocecoil align properly when all is said and done. If you have only small gaps, use a very thin layer of silicone to patch things up, and then some sharpie to make it less obvious. Its inelegant, but its cheap, and hard to beat. I've used a flat edge with vegetable oil on it to shape silicone. If you have ever worked with silicone, you will understand the vegetable oil bit.
