Default Interesting mid/high module

From a Community 4X12 3 way. I would like to concentrate on the mid as the 4X piezo, while interesting is not really my cup of tea even though it seems to be a really nice implementation.

Convex metal dome behind the metal mesh plus extended diaphragm (all one piece with glued coil), no phase plug and lightly damped back chamber (cavity in the pole piece)

Assembled unit from the front ready to mount to the module. I find this rather interesting especially the diaphragm, Not sure I've seen that before. Anyone else?

I've only seen it on the datasheet (there's a cutaway view showing that), and found it very interesting too.

How does it sound? Is it still available?

Edit: The 'phase plug' still exist, just not cover the dome. It block the 'suround' - or should be seen as the outer area of the whole diaphragm.

Hi, I just had a look at the cut away diagram and now it makes more sense, thanks. As far as the sound goes, I'll have to leave that for another day and will report back. I'm busy using the other parts of the speaker.

Turns out it's Mylar which if I remember correctly is DuPont's trade name for aluminum oxide coated polyester.

From a CSXs2 cabinet right? Used the 57s2's for many years. Actually a very good sounding fuzzy box. Mostly eminence drivers inside so replacements were inexpensive. The automotive light bulbs were a trip. You knew you were out of gas when the ports lit up! The M200 diaphrams should still be stocked. I think they crossed the piezo's really high so they just added some sparkle.

m200 = awesome sounding midrange compression driver (m200a is a bit better). The low 4:1 compression ratio makes it smooth and easy to listen to compared to the typical 10:1 ratios. The m200 has a peak then shuts off. You can't eq the highs in.

There is a newer version, the m200a or also the same compression driver used in the avante-garde trio, but they use a different impedance for volume level matching.

Best to run m200 24db LR active crossed at 600hz and 4khz.
The stero lab 400hz spherical tractrix from Germany should be best assuming you can live with the directivity of a tractrix. Myself, I like a wider dispersion cd horn, but I bet the round horn has less reflections than my ev h90 (great horn), or anything else out there.

look on audioasylum.com for an author named djk. Unlike others, he has extensive experience with them.

Norman

Aren't they? They have enough goodies in that there XO to make a half a dozen speakers by my reckoning.

They quote a 4K XO and that would make sense with the M200 but I would have no idea. That XO reminds me of a Calcutta traffic jam.

They actually say 1.84:1 so that seem even better? Certainly an interesting take on the word "compression". If the attachment shows up then you'll see why I think this is an interesting set up from a set of speakers that I basically "stole" from my local public house. It's nice when the owner drinks too.

No plans for it quite yet. Just robbed the woofers for a new "itch" I am hoping to scatch. The mids do sound good though, perhaps something in the next couple'o'years. There are many projects on the board whereby the product is getting a more than wee dusty. My urge to compile projects seems greater than my capacity these days.

The piezos, what can I say... I am considering using them instead of speaker spikes.

Oops, did I say that? Sorry Mr. Motorola
