Default studio monitors

have been pondering a W-M-T design and notice a 'home stereo' design generally will have the W-M-T drivers in vertical alignment physically.
the studio monitor is at times a M-T in horizontal alignment above the woofer.

am wondering if the studio design is meant to facilitate the mid above the tweeter if laid on a long side of cabinet for near field listening... or keeping drivers in close proximity of each other if long side is vertical.

will the studio style of design have a suitable response for a 'home style' configuration? (mid and tweeter aligned horiz, above the woofer)

tks
scott

Hi Scott,
Studio monitors are often put sideways on a shelf as you suspect. You really want the drivers in vertical alignment when listening to them. The higher the frequency the more important it is.

thanks for the reply cal,
to elaborate the thoughts for design... 10" woofer and phillips dome mids and seas tweeters. xovers not nailed down yet.
does anybody know suitable xover for the AD0210 sq8 mids? the wider the better.

these will probably consider near-field + range (2-3m).
i would have thought keeping drivers close would provide more suitable 'point' response. (not really down with polar response curves yet).

dunno if these mids will do a sudo widerange response.
tks for replies and positive recommendations.
tks
scott

Near field studio designs evolved into horizontal designs after engineers stared placing regular near field monitors on there sides so they could see over them. The larger or main monitors have been designed horizontaly for a lot longer. Usually the M & T in a vertical alignment between 2 woofs or one coax unit .

Default Did alright for me...

Passive xover from M-T at about 5k, 70W plate on the Quatro 8 with 12dB active LP.
The acoustic + 6dB HP on the mid makes it 3rd acoustic HP at about 160 Hz.

It's a shoehorn, but a valid one!

Later,
Wolf

Default Thanks, Dave!

What can I say- I'm not a 'normal-minded speaker-builder'.
Thank you!

If you're not comfortable doing it, it's probably in your interest to consider having someone do your XO's for you. Do you have access to a speaker store?

have been searching previous designs which had the mids in their design, and am thinking of swapping a philips tweeter for the seas. (RH456, RH567, SP-40)

the 3-way xover i have are 1st order, so was thinking of picking up the philips adf7/3sp for a starting point, and also for future designs in a-b comparison... the xover points are similar to the designs researched.
