Default another n00b question

Hi - ive ben reading many threads on the site since im basically developing an itch to do some DIY speaker building and im going to be bothering everyone with questions that i cannot find answers for using the search functionality on the site

basically my the thing thats puzzling me at the moment is if you have a design for a standmount/bookshelf speaker - could you then basically extend the cabinet into being a floorstander that comprises of being two chambers ...... the first one obviously the amount of volume that the drivers need to work and the lower one just being a kind of a glorified stand that you can fill with sand to add weight to the whole thing

if thats possible then great because i can look at inexpensive projects for a first build which mean i wont need to build a stand or get a commercial one but which also make the speaker look bigger so they visually look better in my room

if thats not possible because the added bits could have an adverse effect on the sound then could someone please try and explain why this would be so

so say for example if i decided to try to build Zaphs SR71's for example then just build another box for them to rest on is there anything wrong with building the two boxes as one huge box and just splitting that up

nothing wrong with that, except that filling the box with sand is a waste - I'd use the whole volume of the two boxes for a suitable woofer (of course you could always use the lower volume for a woofer/sub later)
