Default Janzen crossover component opinions

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has any opinions about substituting the crossover components made by Janzen with other locally available parts available from Parts Express or similar.

As seen here

DTQWT

If matched exactly, would there be an audible difference?

I've used the Jantzen parts plenty and really like them. Especially the Cross Caps.
Can't say the inductors are better or worse than Solen or Erse, they all work fine.

have used the better Jantzen caps & coils on several speakers and always been pleased with them,, have read (never heard) that the very high priced caps can offer some improvement as well as the flat ribbon inductors,,

have never tried the lower price components as I usually have several hundred $$$ in my speakers and try to buy decent items for the COs,,

Jantzen like a lot part distributors don't make the parts. kinda like a Sears store but smaller. They may even change manufacturers from time to time. see Dayton Xover parts and some other even bigger names.

Default Fwiw...

The Jantzen Superior and Silver Z-Caps are very good!

I would always prefer a Z-Cap over a Dayton/Bennic.

And yes- the Jantzens are made in Hungary *I think*.

Besides I'm pretty sure that guy in your link gets all his parts for free. He is def not under any obligation to minimize crossover costs or explore alternative brands.
Some of those caps maybe you could peel off the outer label see another label underneath.

Default Considering...

Maybe it's the fact that they might actually cost less over in Europe. The import fees have to have something to do with it.

As for removing labels, the only other metal-cased cap like the Z-Silver/Superior is the Obbligato that I'm aware of.

Obbligato capacitors

It's obvious that ICW is an OEM for a lot of commercial caps for loudspeakers, and we also know Bennic does OEM for Daytons.

Personally, I'd like to try these in a loudspeaker:

Plastic Capacitors, Inc. - Products - Type LQ

They are what the Representative said he recommends for xovers for those that are interested. Sure 1000VDC is high, but you get a phenolic case and an oil-impregnated film with epoxy filled ends. Seems like they would be ultra-dense, and anti-resonant.

Later,
Wolf

From the tone of your post, maybe you're unaware the Jantzen is available from PE:
Jantzen at parts-express

Here's one man's opinion about the quality of caps available.
Humble Homemade Hifi

Personally, I have found that a "high-quality" bypass cap in parallel with a large value cap does sound better than without it, especially on caps in series with the driver. But, I've also found that the room effects and low quality of the source tend to overwhelm the incremental, expensive improvements that come with such components. If you've addressed those issues (your room is set-up for listening with wall treatments, etc., and your equipment something to be proud of) then you probably should consider the expense of the finer components.
