I have a Mini Aleph I'm using in a near-field set up for my computer. I have a few watts and want something pretty efficient under say 24" tall or so. The speakers will be about 3 feet apart with me out about 4 feet from them.
I've been reading here for months and I can follow along but I have never designed a crossover and I have no measuring equipment at all. Therefore a tried and true design someone could recommend would be ideal.
I like the idea of OB but realize it's probably unrealistic in this set up. I'm looking for >92db with as much low reach as I can get.

One of those posts where every man and his dog would have a valid opinion.
24" is too low for floor standers and pointlessly high for standmounters.

is an issue, as is choosing a near field versus far field design.
At 4 feet you do not need more than a few watts with most speakers.
Any quality near field design would work : Zaph|Audio - 4" Bargain Mini
If you want to go exotic get someone to model a floorstanding TL
or MLTL version, for low power real bass extension counts a lot.
I listen to 1/2 watt 2" USB speakers with pathetic sensitivity at around 2 feet
on my computer, other than no bass they are fine for normal listening levels.

Probably best to google for Linkwitz Pluto review to garner infromation.
You can find info on using other amplifiers and various modifications.
FWIW one aspect of speaker design is called "critical distance", the point
where direct sound = reflected sound. The more directional a speaker
(e.g. front horn loading) the longer this distance, the more widespread
a speaker is the shorter is this distance. This distance is essentially the
pointy where nearfield and farfield are the same.
Consequently in my estimation (and experience with my egg shaped 2"
computer speakers) the Pluto would give an experience that for more
normal speakers you would have to sit further away to get the same
sort of vista and image spaciality.
I do not agree with all the details of the Pluto, e.g. with no sub an
overdamped (the port is tuned low) vented alignment is IMO a far
better compromise than simply sealed with Q=0.5.
There is a lot of nice detail and radical thinking in the Pluto, at 4 feet
distance I cannot imagine volume could be an issue except for very low
bass, here the extra SPL capability of low tuned vented will help a lot.
I suppose you could fold the bass pipe to get under your 24" height.

I don't know about radical... Electrohome was doing much the same in the 60s, and the precursor for Hegeman's 70s execution was done in the 50s.

I was reminded again today by visitors how well these perform. Add a sub for adequate bottom (needs to be fairly extened to gel).

I'd like to avoid using a sub. I ran across this the other day and thought it was an intriguing idea to run the woofer full range with a tweeter.

Look at one of the EL70 boxes... milliSize, primeSize, folded halfTower when i reconfigure it (the last 2 can produce serious bass).
That woofer is similar to that used in the Dynaco A25, and even closer to that used in the World Design WD25 kits -- Scott & i did a TL up for that kit (Classic TL Revisited). Any 2-way you need to worry about not being far enuff away for them to integrate...

That one fits in alot of similar boxes. The EL70 is paper cone in the same basket. It digs a bit lower with a bit more weight, and is ~3 dB more efficient. Creative Sound - Product Details
A customer built bipole EL70 Mets & took the subwoofer out (in his HT). The primeSize miniOnken goes almost as low and will fit in your available space.

I haven't measured yet, but i'd guess into the 40s by comparison to stuff that i knows go lower. Lots of mid bass kick. Still going at 20k but a bit down but with output still at 30k.

Works for me, mine are by a long shot the best small monitors I've had for computer use. Wouldn't shame themselves in a small room as (very) small standmounts either for that matter.
