Default Vifa TC18WG69 enclosure help

Hello everyone!

I am completely stuck with designing enclosures for this driver. I've tried to consult WinISD, but I only get either a HUGE enclosure (83 litres tuned at 30 Hz), or a nice sized enclosure with a huge spike around 100 Hz and an organ pipe for the reflex channel.

Here's the driver specs: Riviera Acoustics - TC18WG69-08 Midwoofer

I was hoping to build a nice bookself speaker with these drivers since I got them real cheap second-hand, but the project isn't going anywhere now. I know the enclosure shouldn't be larger than the Vas of the element, so the 83 litres seems ridiculous. Should I just sell the drivers, since they've been only collecting dust, or can I actually get something useful out of them?

Best regards,
Simo

If you have the time I would consider/suggest using the simulator from Wayne Parham instead of WinISD at the PiSpeakers Website. Go to: Pialign Analysis Software to help you design your enclosures. This is the old DOS original from 1977.

I have mine TC18-49 - same driver specs, different frame, in a 24L sealed box, actually I wish I had gone a bit smaller. Probably not smaller than 12 liters. Not that critical...

anything with Qts>0.4 will require Vb>Vas in a vented box.

I might check it out one day, but right now I don't have the time to learn to use a new simulating program

Didn't know that, thanks! WinISD gives me 37 litres for the sealed box with Qtc of 0,707, which is a tad bit large. If I reduce it down to 12, the Qtc is almost 1. But I guess we have to make compromises

There is nothing magic aboput a Qtc of 0.707 - 1 even sounds better on much material. My boxes sound too lean, honestly, and I like lean bass...

What Tangband/Monacor tweeter would you guys recommend to go with this driver?

The problem is not with the tweeter. That tweeter looks marvelous (on paper). The problem is with the xover frequency, and/if the midwoofer can resist at around 1K to be merged at xover band. (This is) If you 'r pointing for a textbook 2K5/3K xover and you can design the xover, look at frequency output at/around 1KHz. How are you about solving the peaks and dips?

I was actually going to do an active speaker with a Tripath Ta2020 or 2024 stereo amp. One channel would be feeding the tweeter, other the bass. So I could (and will) use a line-level Xover.

Hello again!

I've made no progress at all with these drivers, until my cousin informed me she needs a pair of speakers. I have 4 of these drivers, and intend to do a floorstanding pair with 2 of these in each. The speakers would have about 30l internal volume, sealed enclosure. They would be placed next to a concrete wall. I'm planning of doing the xover low, 6db/oct at 1kHz and maybe putting a full range or a tweeter that can go low on the upper end.

Would this work?
