hey! just tried that thing....
placed an old sub in front of my face, vertically, so that cone faces to the left and the magnet to the right. and the bass is so clear!!!

acoustical short circuit,
6db/octave.. low Q no boxyness.. Sounds like a dipole,thats what they are arent they?just with a longer cancellation(short circuit) wavelength?

...And the room hasn't got a chance at degrading the sound when you're so close to the woofer
