Default Underhung mid-woofers?

Hello,

Does anyone have any ideas as to why one of these drivers is producing MAJOR distortion? These are from an Acoustic zen adagio speaker. Di'appolito design. I don't feel any coil rubbing, and everything looks and feels fine. One thing possibly worth mentioning is that...this is a very scientific test btw...when I blow into the vent hole, one driver ( the good one) has slightly less air heard escaping than the bad one. I guess the air is exiting out the spider? Normal scenario I think, but visually and mechanically I don't understand why it would sound so crackly.

Any ideas?

Hello.

Did you make some particular usage just before cracking ??
I mean playing loud for a party or something out of their normal use ??

Do they have the same DC resistance ??

No loud parties. Same resistance. One just sounds VERY distorted.

Hello.

Look to the gluing of the dust cap, spider and maybe surround.

Absolutely. This is one of the most obvious diagnosis that I have ever come accross. Robert Lee of AZ said he would gladly replace. He's a kind man. But I'm just curious WHAT could be causing this?

Yes, it could.
Most of time this type of problem occur with variable intensity with music signal.

On an Altec 414A I had this problem with loud "cloc" and change in the acoustic level, it did look like cut voice coil... total repair under garanty (I'd just change the clothe surround), I was sad, and sorry for my client when I discover the problem.

I checked that. It is soldered ok to the terminals. So...it could be loose on the end where it goes into the cone?
