Much has been said about the GW-1858 as good OB woofers , but what about the GW-215/4 , they look pretty interesting and seem to have good specs for an H-frame OB matched to a 3" or 4" Full range
Anyone have experience with them? Please can someone suggest an H-Frame for it? Thank you |

Hi tonytex,
I have not used this speaker but have listened to Carver dipoles with a similar high Qts ~ 2 and thought that the bass was sloppy and undetailed. For an H-baffle I favor a Qts between 0.7 and 0.8, since the motor still is strong enough to have good control of the cone motion. The air mass loading of the H-frame will slightly increase Qt. I think you would get noticably better bass from the GW-1858. It would be safest to copy one of GM's documented and reviewed designs from quaterwave.com. Just accept the larger H-baffle. In the USA, the Acoustic Elegance IB15 speaker looks like a very good dipole choice for $125-$150. The efficiency is low at 87 db, and two IB15s are often wired in parallel and run from a plate amp. FROM PARTS EXPRESS GW 215: These low frequency OEM drivers are ideal for the customer who is looking for inexpensive replacement woofers. Each woofer features a treated paper ribbed cone, vented pole piece, moisture resistant poly foam surround, and stamped steel frame.
