Default A set of old German-made stereo speakers.

There was a garage sale at a mall near where I live.
It was a treasure trove of vintage things! AND cheap!

NES, S-NES, SEGA, XBox games. Thousands of LP's and Tapes.
Comodore Vic-20 systems, Nintendo s. And there were speakers! Most of them 60's to 70's to 90's. Big floor models and mid-sized bookshelf speakers lined one of the walls. Most were low to midrange in quality and a few were expensive from twenty years ago but beaten up.

I found this unique pair off to the side. The label was half torn but there were a set of: Grundig Radio- HiFi-Lautsprecher-Box 425

They are nicely made plywood with a fine veneer. The front is solid wood slats.Never seen that before, does anybody here have the same model?
I tried opening the back be removing the 12 wood screws that secure it, but the back panel was on so tight I's chip and damage it all to hell if I tried forcing it.

I don't even know what kind of drivers they have or how many.
Can I assume that the drivers are fairly good quality as the case quality is superb? I looked around and I believe these are from 1967

On one of my speakers cabinets, it looks like somebody (probably decades ago) set a plant pot down on it because there is a light spot where a damp pot must have been.

Hi,

here is a description I found for the 425...
http://wega.we.funpic.de/HIFI_JAHRBU...07-grundig.jpg
It seems to be a 3-way with two tweeters (88mm cone), one mid (176x126mm) and one bass (204mm).
It should be fun to hear. Maybe the TTs have cloth surrounds (Isophon style). The other cones will have pure paper cones and surrounds.

I know I know, I was dying to test them too! But I didn't expect to be coming home with two beautiful vintage German made speakers that day.

I'm moving tomorrow so unfortunately the speakers are here and my stereo amplifiers are over there in my new home in a box.
I'll rush over there tomorrow morning with the German speakers and test them with some loud music. And what music am I going to obnoxiously pound out of those babies you ask!? Why.................RAMMSTEIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for finding that info Josch. Appreciate it very much.
Interesting; they have four drivers each?? Reading the german I see that there are two tweeters, one mid-range, and one woofer. Yes?

The ad says 40-20,000 hz. This is a noob question, but is that any "good"?
I confess I am just entering the world of not having junk speakers.

I was confused because of it's age. 50's to 60's. Shouldn't it say 'Made in w. Germany'? One page I saw online says they are from
1967 – 1969.

For example: my electric shaver was made in 1975 and on the inside of the case, it says "Made in w. Germany". I used a ruler in school and it said "made in w. Germany". Anything I saw made after 1989 says simply "Made in Germany". That is why I am scratching my head.

40Hz might be the -xdB frequency for the in-room-response?
These numbers tell not that much and you will find some modern speaker (from cheap to megabucks) with the same 40-20.000Hz:-)
Maybe the 20kHz are not enough for some people today but I would not care.
Just wire it up and take a listen. I have never heard these ones but I gave some old Telefunken Klangbox to my girlfriend. They have same style drivers, only two-way and the tweeter is oval which gives some directivity. Sound is lounge style. Not that much detail and the bass is on the very warm side with a bump on the bottom. I expect the 425 to have nice mids. For some reason I like the mids of the old SABA, Telefunken, Isophon paper cone drivers of that age.
But again...judge yourself and tell us...
