Default Audiophile speaker?

Hi everyone!
My name is Ramiro. I´m from Argentina.
I´m a huge fan of diy audio.
I´m looking for a midwoofer to use with a Fountek Neocd3 ribbon tweeter.
I have a pair of Polk LSI7´s drivers, but they aren´t a good match for ribbons.
What speaker do you recommend me to use with the Founteks?

Ribbon Tweeters, Ribbon Transducers, True Ribbon Speaker Components , loudspeaker introduced by Fountek

Might be worth a look. I have no experience with the tweeter of which you speak, but I expect that, being from the same manufacturer, that woofer would be a good match.

Welcome to the forum.
Chris

Welcome Ramiro. I'm positively astonished by the specification of the Fountek Neocd3 ribbon tweeter. Extremely wideband, linear frequency response and no breakup. As a consequence, the impulse response is excellent. I guess that you would like a midbass driver having the same attributes. You are right in doubting about the Midbass and Midranges made by Fountek. Their aluminium cone exhibit breakup at high frequency, and this is contradicting the philosophy of your Fountek Neocd3 ribbon tweeters. Fortunately, there are excellent wideband midbass drivers on the market, easy to filter and without cone breakup. Here is my list :

Monacor SPH-130
Monacor MSH-115
Monacor MSH-116/4
Monacor MS-100CHQ

TangBand 75-1558SE (big dome with Xmax 1.4 mm)
TangBand W23-1287SI (Xmax only 0.9 mm)

Fostex FE87E (Xmax only 0.4 mm)

Dayton RS100T-8 (Xmax 3.7 mm)
Dayton RS100-4 (Xmax 4.0 mm)

TangBand W4-1320SJ (Xmax 3.0 mm)
TangBand W4-1052SD (Xmax 3.4 mm)
TangBand W3-1053SC (Xmax 1.5 mm)
TangBand W3-1401SD (Xmax 3.5 mm)

TangBand makes some excellent driver indeed, I'd also like to point your attention to;

TangBand;
W5-704D
W6-789E (high SPL, low cost )
W5-1611SA
W5-1140SD
W8-750C
W6-1721 (huge underhung magnet)
W5-1685 (huge underhung magnet)

I personally very much like the W8-750C and W5-1611SA. The W5-1140SD would probably also be a favourite, but I haven't been able to find a place that sells them yet...

My favourite!
I have a pair of these in my DIY mini "studio monitore" coupled with titanium supertweeters. Maybe I should try with founteks. Till now I havent experiences with ribbons.
This midbass needs just coil 0.47 - 0.56 mH. For HF suitable 3rd order on tweeter (reverse polarity).

About filtering the tweeter that's associated to a quality midbass like Monacor SPH-130, have you checked post #7 in Full range drivers a question ?

Hello Ramiro!

A driver that could be an excellent match with good foils or ribbons is the Veravox 5. It has the speed and resolution most of the heavy cone mainstream drivers don't have. Unfortunately I only have heard it without tweeter, and the typical paper highs on top disturbed the midrange qualities to my ears. With its larger brother, the Veravox 7 you shoud have the chance to get low enough in a two-way system.
Solen Electronique Inc.
Parameters look very suitable for a BIB. If you want to upgrade to three-way one day you still have an excellent midrange.
And with a large ribbon and a widerange driver you can do 6 dB crossover without problems.

I have matched the Neopro5i with the B&C 6MD38, PHL1120 and the 18sound 6nd410. These are all mid range drivers with limited Xmax. I matched the 2 way up with a bass bin (making it a 3 way).

The 6.5" woofers from Aespeakers.com would be another good match. The TD6M with its sensitivity will match well.

Well, i have some new info.
I´ve tried to match the Polk LSI7 midbass with the Founteks without a good result.
The Polk appears to be a Peerless custom design (830860) but with other cone.
I´ve crossed them with the founteks at 3khz with a 18db slope without success. They sounded very distorted on the cross point.

Should i try cutting the midbass at 2.4khz with the Fountek starting at 3khz or it isn´t a good choice? I´ve heard that these config can be a solution for peaks in the crosspoint.

Another interesting point is that i´ve tried the midbass by itself, cutted at 3khz with an active filter, and they sound with the same peak at the crosspoint. So i thinking that 3khz isn´t a good crosspoint for them.
I´ve read Polk´s website, they cross the midbass at 2.4khz with the tweeter, but 2.4khz isn´t an option for Founteks because it´s a dangerous cut for them.

Sorry for my english, is not perfect i know, but if you don´t understand something, just ask and i will try to spell it better
