Default Drivers for small PC speaker

Hello,

I am plannig to build a small 2way PC speaker. I would like to hear your opinion about my driver selection:
W: Visaton TI100 or TB W4-1337SD
T: Fountek NeoCD2.0 or Seas 22TAF/G or Vifa XT19

I am inclined to TI100 + NeoCD2.0 crossed at 2.5-3kHz.
My problem is that I have never heard W4-1337SD. Can somebody compare this with Visaton?

Music:Rock 60s-90s; classical
Room: 18m^2
Listening distance:1m. sometimes 2.5m
Total price: <400EUR

Alpair A7... no XO, and just inside your budget. I'm listening to a set right now. Stock & they are eerie. I am quite enchanted.

Alpair 6 was on my list. After reading Zaph test I choose TI100 and TB.

Can you compare Alpair 6 sound to some other speakers? I do not think that I have any chance to listen to it anywhere.
Currently I have in house a 2way with RS180 and Seas tweeter and Fostex FF125k (BIB) + Fountek ribbon. I have also heard Visaton drivers (AL series) and some Seas prestige.
I would like to have midrange of fostex (I love how voices sound) + low end of metal drives.

IMO, having heard both, and used the W4-1337SD extensively, the 1337 is at least on a par with the Visaton, if not slightly better. Another candidate that I prefer slightly better than either is the W4-1757SB, but you have to like 'baby Accuton' look. I used the 1337 in the Statement series, and the 1757in the Maverick design.

Another suggestion: At 70% of the cost of the NeoCD 2.0, the NeoCD3.0 will have better vertical off axis performance, and since any of the above drivers can easily cross up to the required 3.5 to 4 K, there is no real down side for using the smaller ribbon. In fact, some may consider it an advantage to cross outside of the frequency band where the ear is most sensitive.

The Alpair 6 is a 1st generation Mark Audio cone, The A7 is the new multiform cone and has a dramatically upgraded suspension That makes a BIG performance difference. The A7 is definitly pushing into Fostex territory midrange-wise without any of the hash that exists in the Fostex (even after being dramatically reduced by my treatment). All of Mark's drivers are really credible in the bass, and with the cap acting as a 20mm tweeter diagphram, very extended on the top. All without any of that metal zing.

Thanks Curt!
Thanks Dave!

This was the information that i was looking for.

It looks like both Alpair 7 and W4-1337SD are excellent choices. Maybe I just order both and sell one pair after testing.
I have nothing against the look of W4-1757SB but i have no idea where to order it from. (in Europe)

Have a look at Audiokit (Italy): Tangband speakers

No affiliation, but received a good service in the past.

Does Alpair 7 need a tweeter? If yes, which one would be a good choice?

How much desktop space do you have? I like a 2.1 system for the desktop to get decent bass without consuming my entire desk. You could have a nice pair of sealed full-range + active sub for that budget.

Why would you want a crossover in the midband on a nearfield system? IMO, a widebander, perhaps augmented down low, would be a better choice. I don't know all of the new ones, but the Vifa TG9 is quite good, perhaps with two decent 4" woofers for midbass backup (Aura NS4?). And there are tons of designs for the 10BGS, too. That's what I used before I moved up to 8" Tannoy Dual Concentrics for my nearfield system.
