Hi Guys,
After two succesfull projects (Tri-trix speakers and a simple SE tube amp), I am considering my third project to be an open baffle speaker. I would like to use a full rnage driver with a 15" woofer combination. Given that my tube amp is only capable of 16W, I need something that will end up at >90 db/W/m efficient. On an aesthetics, I would prefer a very thin design when viewed from the front. In the ideal, I would like to approximate speakers floating in the air. I just think that would look cool. Given that throwing ideas around is free, I thought I would ask for some recommendations. Thanks Salsero |

Tube friendly mids and highs you can do on OB all day long. 90dB/watt is not a problem with the right driver and baffle.
Tube friendly bass, not so easy. You'll need a lot of surface area for the baffles and the cones. It can be done, but not in a minimalist way. It takes surface area and displacement. However, why not choose the best of both worlds? Use tubes up top for the mids and highs (could be the same driver) and solid state grunt on the bottom. It could be as simple as tubes on top and a plate amp on the bottom. Or even a bi-amped passive rig. An 18" is even better for bass in this kind of rig. Have a look at the Dayton PA460-8, or the Goldwood GW-1858. Both good woofers that will give you a different feel in the bass and will need different crossover techniques. There are plenty of good OB designs around the forum. Seek and yee shall find.

Try this...?
Get some 3/8" Plywood, cut two panels......40" wide, 20 " high ...Put this noted full-range 8" driver ($31 Ea.) in from the back. Wrap the whole front side in a light Mauve fabic, hang the assembly from the ceiling with forty pound test fishing line. Run a series of small hooks down the backside to get the assembly angled down. Set it up about face high 15-20" from the wall...or? Run some 20 gauge white Zip-cord to the corners. I did something like this in 1980 & it sounded great. __________________________________________________ ______Rick.... |

Hi,
OB speakers are definitively not thin with a 15" ? If you want a full OB speaker with 16W ... not possible. A solid state amplifier is needed at least 50W for the bass. And you can use the tube amplifier for the midrange. An other solution, You can do a semi OB. Fullrange OB and Box for the woofer. An example is here, sorry it's in french.
