These monsters were dropped off in my shop for some TLC.
Huge, heavy, unnecessary ugly gray color paint. Hmm what to do? So many options. |

Fiberglass, ports, screws are removed. Fiberglass will probably have to be replaced. Whoever finished them (or factory job) sprayed paint on fiberglass as well. about half of it is solidified.

Casework will be veneered so all this 1/4" of gray (navy gray or military gray) paint has to come off.
Time for paint stripper. MMM yam yam. Kids, don't try this at home unless you already have and know all the fun parts. Paint stripper stinks to high heaven, it stings, causes skin rushes and imminent death! Kidding,.... but the stuff is nasty. |

3 hours later 95% of paint are gone.
Binding posts plates are knocked out and bases are removed. New bases will be made to replace this water damaged cracked pine. |

From my recollection that overspray on the fiberglass was typical of production (worked there in the early 80's). Especially at the end of the port tubes so that the yellow didn't show through.
Looks like the beginnings of a good restoration! David |

Indeed , when I bought it 1.5 yr ago, my 4430's stuff looked like that until I put it into a bag and threw it out. Too old, smells and looks dangerous (dust).

Perhaps this is an opportunity to stiffen up/brace this box a bit as well before veneering it.

Looks that way to me as well. For example, mid section between 2 woofers looks awfully weak. But I'll wait till the work is done and drivers are in place. CSD will shine some light on the case quality.

After close inspection one miter joint appear to be open. Oh well, nothing a couple of clamps and a drop of yellow glue can't fix. Let it seat over night.

The surface is being leveled out. Bondo the holes and small damages. After a bit of sanding more holes are visible. Over all the case work is not in a bad condition. Damages a minor but there's quite a few of them.
