Firstly, thanks for the replies to my skytronics thread..... Heres another one.
Anyone played with the maplin range of hi fi drivers. 8? 90W Shielded Bass/Mid Woofer : Hi-Fi Speakers : Maplin I've had fun with these in the past but found they burnt up too easily and did'nt work well in dual cabinet setups. ![]() EDIT..... Does anyone know who makes these????? |

Regarding the 8in unit L74AW, on the plus side a 2 way design is possible as the response extends just beyond 3kHz. On the minus side there is a high Q break-up mode at 2.5kHz giving a 6dB peak. I notched this out with a series RLC filter 6.6mH 0.75uF & 20 ohm, placed across the driver. The trouble is the filter needs tweaking to get the frequency exactly right. I used a Maplin tweeter L65AW. I was going to use a ported 40litre box as the Qts is quite high. I used a third order3kHz filter on the woofer and a 2nd order on the tweeter as crossovers.
