The iron Powder type has lower permiabilty and that makes them saturate at higher current,In other words -less distortion at high power.

Default One more thing . . .

What will saturate quicker if I use the whole 4 inches of each ferrite rod to wind my inductors or if I use say 2 inches of each ferrite rod I bought to wind each inductor and then cut off the rest? My guess would be the more ferrite there is the slower it will saturate, no?

Also this is not that important, but I was wondering if what I'm making is called transformer type inductor or is that something totally different? Is it a better inductor at 12 mH than what I'm attempting to do?

If you`ll be using 2 inches of ferrite on the same spool of wire you`ll get less induction, you`ll have to add more wire to it,and that will also add dc resistance to the coil.
Remember, air core is more linear then metal core, you must consider several factors when designing a metal core inductor in order to use it in it`s linear area.
I wish i knew more about it.......

Cored Inductor/Transformer design is very complex - I am certainly no expert; just someone with a passing interest and a fair amount of physics background. The complexities are the reason you don't see more people DIYing cored inductors.

That said, saturation probably isn't dependant on core length, rather core area and the number of turns and the current through the coil.

Some cores are made to hang out somewhat from the inductor and thus they achieve better flux linkage and higher inductance, or so I've heard. Perhaps leaving a half inch or so of bare ferrite on either side of the windings would be a good idea.

You can buy decent quality ERSE 12mH cored inductors from PArts Express for ~$15. Save the 12ga. for something simpler/smaller....

Funny the designer of my inductor, alvaius, said the same thing, but I already ordered those rods.
