software to compare wav to wav played back through speaker?

I'm looking for a means to roughly view and record loudspeaker compression using a brief high crest factor odaiko drum transient by analyzing harmonics of the original wav taken from cd and comparing that to a recording of the same wav played back through the speaker (and amp) under test. What software, preferably free, will work and is appropriate?

Do not be surprised very much if the two things will not be even in nodding acquaintance with each other.
This is an interesting thought otherwise.
Audacity good, free.
But with a what kind of microphone you think of it, and with what kind of sound card?
From the price of a good gauge microphone complete high-end it is possible to build up a system.
