Hello all,
I am thinking of starting a new project with the 4" Tangband W4-657SC, which I already have in stock, paired with the Peerless 5 1/4" SDS 830880 passive radiator. There would be some tweeter taking care of the very high frequenzies and adding a bit "air" to the sound. I was thinking of doing a crossover with the W4-657SC at 10kHz, since the full ranges response seems to get bumpy after it. I think it would also need dampening at the 6-7kHz range. The tweeter only needs to take care of the very highs, so I was thinking of taking a cheap tweeter such as this TB 13-1264S (sorry that the text is in finnish, couldn't find a proper english datasheet). The tweeter is more sensitive than the full range, so I was thinking of mounting this on the back side of the enclosure, so the high frequenzies wouldn't be so "stingy". I am not very experienced with designing cabinets such as these, especially working with passive radiators is totally new to me. If someone has any advices about this project I would appreciate it. |

I built a 2 way with the 657 SB. Like you, I started with the intention of crossing over quite high and taking advantage of the wide bandwidth driver. Unfortunately, the response of the driver is quite awful above 2 kHz and I had to drive the xover quite low.
I went with a small 2-way sealed and the D26NC. Attached is the system response. This is proper quasi-anechoic down to below 50 Hz. Look at that woofer, what a dog (haha). The two drivers I bought were also poorly matched and required slightly different xovers to match left and right at the system level. One thing I notice on the good side is that the bass totally belies both the size and the response. Its bizarre but it really does have great low end for a tiny driver. However, there is a "haze" in the lower treble and upper mid that is impossible to be rid of and is quite noticeable. Klang and Tong published distortion measures and they aren't flattering for the Tang Band, perhaps this is the issue. I spent a lot of time tweaking this xover and IMO, don't waste your time with this woofer. Move on to a better driver. DaveW4657 D26NC Feb2 2009 Xover.gif |

Thanks for the informative post Dave, I could say that you just saved me the price of the elements. Case closed on this project
