Default Driver testing in NJ

Hello FOlks,

I recently had some speaker problems, and the vendor I bought the driver from believes that the measurements I took with my PartsExpress WT3 and Fluke 77 are probably not useful. Given the benefit of how cheap the WT3 is, I have to somewhat agree, though I figured consistent results and differences between two drivers should be respected regardless of the testing equipment.

This said, does anyone know of a professional service that will measure drive T/S parameters and also advise why a speaker is blown (clear vibration when playing certain frequencies and voice coil rubbing)? I'm in NJ, but NYC is an easy drive. Someone with an Audio Precision device would be great.

Thanks,
Paul

What exactly are you trying to do?

Is it a new driver that is bad? Send it back and let them sort it out.

Meanwhile, practice and learn how to use your equipment.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, there's not much to figure out with a WT3. It works, and I get consistent results, but the speaker vendor doesn't respect reults from that device.

I am indeed sending the driver back for evaluation, but I wanted to get "professional" measurements first since the vendor is assuring me that the pair of drivers I bought couldn't possibly be defective since they are Scanspeaks (18W/8531G to be precise). They are two months old.

While I certainly respect any vendor's view in regards to many consumers blowing speakers and then blaming the drivers, I want to ensure that they handle this properly. To me, "properly" would be to replace the pair of drivers, not just the one with the voice coil rub, because the Qes on each of them started at 0.40, and is currently 0.60. While I respect driver break in, that's a bit much.

Anyway, I don't want to go into too much more detail because I do not wish to implicate the designer, or the reseller. For now, i just want some referrals to a shop that provides this type of service in my area.

Thanks!
