I am looking to pair either the Seas ER18RNX or the Dayton RS180 in a 2 way MTM configuration with the Seas 27TDFC. I want to make sure that I end up with well articulate midrange and lower mids, not as concerned about low end as I have a sub. Any advice?

I have both these drivers with the Seas 27TDFC. The Seas ER18RNX is superior to the Dayton RS-180. You will get much better mids with the ER18 but it does cost more.
You can check them out at: ER18RNX at STARLING RS180 at MERLIN Personally, 7" is rather large for a MTM. My preference is 5-1/4". You may want to consider ZA14 instead. ZA14 at SWIFT Regards Mike

How do you mean 7" is too large for MTM? Please explain.

A larger woofer means this distance is longer. You will now have to cross over at a lower frequency. In the link posted by DcibeL, note the crossover is set at a very low corner frequency. 1.65kHz at 12dB/oct is demanding a lot from a tweeter. Compression drivers are comfortable from 1kHz to 2kHz. Not tweeters.

27TDFC is perfectly happy with this crossover point, as are some other regular dome tweeters.

I thought the Seas tweeter would be ok there. Another point is I think the RS180s would be happier in a larger enclosure as opposed to the Seas 7" looks like it likes a smaller enclosure.

I would recommend taking a closer look at the new SEAS U18RNX/P.
THE ART OF SOUND PERFECTION BY SEAS - H1571-08 U18RNX/P The new SEAS kit, "Idunn" provides a good case study of what this driver can do: THE ART OF SOUND PERFECTION BY SEAS - Idunn If I hadn't already forked out on a pair of W17CY-001 ,the U18 Would definitively have been my choice as it seems to have a lot of the EXCEL series qualities, but more moderately priced and a very smooth frequency response making it easy to work with. |

I'm really thinking of going with the Modulas, good established design less expensive drivers though more expensive x-over, but MT or MTM? I just don't think I would be happy with the output of the MTs....
