I'm Having trouble understanding the exact parts I need , Could I get some help ? At Parts express I see Many types of "cores" and the like ... How do I know what I need ?
Or better yet a simple List of parts from PE would be nice ![]() A person here told me he could order all the parts from Mundorf or somthing ... Said It's very high quality , is that better then what PE has to offer ? Last edited by DIFORCE; 26th December 2009 at 02:01 PM. |

What are the Brands and Model Numbers for the woofer and tweeter ?
The quality level of those will determine how much money it is worth spending on capacitors and inductors, particually as some are very expensive.

Its the zaph audio L18 design. with the Seas L18 H1224 7' woofer and the 27TB somthing tweeter ... The woofer is being used also In Joseph audio bookshelf design that retails for 2300$ and is speaker of the year 2002 so my guess is its worth it

I've built 2 sets of these. They are OK but nothing to get too excited about. I'm listening to a set right now and still think the midrange is suspect, ever though I do like the bass. I think what would be exciting is if Zaph did a small 3-way with these drivers and his new driver.

NAD T785 NAD T535 player I may try the other crossover version. I'm not quite sure why it is crossed so high. It seems that a lower cross may be better. (Not sure) |

As far as part quality the Mundorf products are some of the best at all their price points. Their Silver/oil caps which I use are among the best caps made,
but are 80 to 120 euros for the values you need . PE has good parts , try using film caps and air core inductors(coils) within your budget, let the speakers burn in when complete for a few hundred hours then decide if the crossover design is proper. Seems the xover point is a bit high. |

Zaph lists the resistance of the coils. Even on your crossover schematic, where it says "this resistance is a part of the inductor". Then you go on parts Express web site, chose the inductors with same listed DCR (it is there), cored inductors are usually a bit cheaper. 16 or 14 g will do just fine. Air Core will work just as well but you'll be paying more.
Cups are a never ending discussion, however nobody has been able to spot a difference in a double blind test yet. Get Solens or Bennic and you'll be fine. Gowa, with the given slope, lower crossover point will allow the tweeter to work in a higher harmonic distortion area. If you look at Zaphs tweeter mishmash, it's dreaded 3rd order distortion that goes up below 2khz for this particular tweeter. |

OK every one, this thing about not hearing the difference between different caps is getting tiring . The statement "nobody has been able to spot the difference in a blind test yet" who are these nobodies? DYI'ers come to this site for help, that statement only confuses the discussion, there is a sonic difference between a $ 3 cap and a $ 30 cap of the same value the the real point is can one justify the added cost taking in to account the quality of the parts in your design. Give the newcomers to this hobby a chance to find out for them selves.
