Default On the Fence

So, I'm on the fence. I'v set a goal to build (not design ) my entire audio system from dac to speakers, and all thats left to do are the speakers. Now in the begging of all this audio madness I had assumed the speakers would be the easiest part. After looking at all the different options and design philosophies for months on end, and researching what it would take/need to design my own from scratch. I'v come to the conclusion that my initial assumption was incorrect. The main problem is I know deep down I won't be satisfied ( if thats at all possible ) unless I build speakers that sound great. Now whats great? Well, thats up for debate. But to me, great is being able to feel the snap of a drum and hear the shimmer of a snare, to melt in my chair when Nora Jones is playing, and able to make me play air guitar when led zepplin or the doors are cranked and yet still allow me sit and listen for hours without fatigue, cost less then $2000, and on top of that, be accepted by my better half. (sorry for the run on sentence), I own a pair of B&W 601s3's. They just don't cut it. Whats a man to do? My uneducated opinion would be a 60-80 liter 3-way with low distortion drivers. Maybe a design from Troels Gravesen's site. But the idea of an open baffle design (like the Orion) intrigues me. Should I try and fumble my way though a open baffle 3-way design with an dxc2496, or just build a box speaker. I really don't mind building a 6ch. amp for the open baffle, or a powerful SS 2ch. for inefficient speakers.(right now I have a F4) Really I'm just looking for some opinions, hopefully you guys can help me make the right choice.

Hi,

IMO, what you really need to do is some serious listening of good commercial builds, then talk about the one you liked best. Then we can help you DIY a similar sound for a fraction of the cost.

Cheers!

How big is your F4 and what are you using to feed it?

Where in Canada are you?

That (or those) is really great.

Beyond the Ariel would be too big (long) to persue now.

I'd suggest something like My open baffle dipole with Beyma TPL-150

When there's more spare time, this would be a wonderful reading, too: Large midrange for OB??? Scott G ?

Good luck and have fun

A local!

I swear there are more active DIY'ers in the Republic than in the sum total of western Canada.

Cheers!
