Default Looking for really good mini monitor designs

Around the size of an LS3/5a. Not for a sub/sat -more of musical stand alone mini-monitor.

Prefer a closed box 5 inch mid configuration to keep the size down but ported designs are fine too.

Any good ones that come to mind?

Also, if I start from scratch can anyone recommend a 5 inch driver (give or take) that works well in small boxes?

Thanks!

This forum is for "multi-way" speakers.

Anyway, I think Jeff Bagby's "Dreydels" may be just the thing you're after. He designed them while on his quest to "clone" the LS3/5A with better drivers... this became sort of a tangent project. They sound really, really good.

Stephen,

What kind of amp are you going to use to drive these?

Easy enuff to add a super-tweeter, if needed

Or add a tweeter and an XO. These use some really good mid-basses, that just happen to go really high.

I must know something about that... the XO diagram in Jeff's album is my work.

This is the reference mini-monitor of the german Hobby Hifi magazine. The ATD mini-bass is probably the best they ever measured and it (the kit or the bass alone) is still competitive when shipped across the atlantic.

These are great ideas! Planet10, I am using a Sugden A21 right now and will likely have a PP Tube amp as well. I have owned a FE127 speaker before (omega 3r). I was amazed at the coherency of the speaker but underwhelmed with it as a whole. Needed more BSC (some) I think but who knows. I am looking more in line with the other two "traditional" designs. Although...

As a reference I use a version of the LS3/5a from Stirling Broadcast called the V2. Voiced like the original with Seas and Scan Speak drivers. I love them but understand they are but one example of what can be done in a small box. I want to see if I can build something I love just as much - or more.

This is a start for me building so I am trying to keep the complexity down a bit. A mini is a nice start since it won't LOOK overwhelming Although the big Orion LR design would go nice in my yet to be converted home Theater/Music room.

The Drydels look VERY interesting as does the German MMR.

el'Ol - It looks to use Expolinear drivers. Is this the same as ATD?

Expolinear distribute the ATD drivers in Germany. The ribbon is developed and built for them in Bulgaria.

For monitors of that driver size category, I would recommend JX92S with some tweeking. In a small box, you will need some equalization in software, but it should work pretty good.
