Sorry, no measurements
And I have listened to it only briefly
Which is why Im reluctant to say too much
Lying on the floor, connected in paralel to my my 3ways through amp speaker terminals, all playing
A 47uf cap in series, and a series resistor
Immediate sound was indeed somewhat rough, ofcourse
No surprice without proper xo etc
The big surprice was that a rather big resistor improved things a lot
It also appeared that it got better with bigger series cap
They almost sounded like they actually play some hgiher bass notes as well
In the end it was almost sweet and airy, and a bit missed when turned off
Series resistor ended up quite big, maybe 15ohm or more, and they still was up to tyhe SPL of my 3ways
Havent played it loud though
And as you imply, the distorion may rise
I wont use them to play loud, but who would expect them to
But surround/cone assembly is impressively smooth, and I dont think Thiel/accuton could do a better job at that
Voice coil and leads tho looks a bit heavy, more like whats used on woofers
Mods here might improve it
Nice little fun fellows at very low cost, thats all there is to it
But who knows, they may actually shine in the right design
I also have a couple of equally cheap horn I may try them in
It seems like a perfect fit to a 1.5" exit throat
I hope to know more in a couple of months
Have to experiment more
Dont take it all too literally, you may have a different experience of it
I may too, when I work on it again, those things happen all too often with speakers

I like this driver a lot - quite wondeful. See my thread here: Fast, fun, Inexpensive OB project

Also see it here with a bigger tweeter:
Meet-Fall09 __ About 1/2 way down, open baffle.

EDIT: Same woofer used here, 2 per side:
Big passive OB project

I suppose you know that Madisound sells a special Seas 10", an update of the famous 2way Dynaco, but relatively expencive
Thanks - wasn't aware of the SEAS 10 - can you provide the link?

You have to realise that even if a response curve looks smooth, it doesnt tell how it really sounds
And a driver that measure a bit rougher, could actually sound way better
Insight knowledge is needed
But the driver you need should have no peaks anywhere

Seas Prestige A26RE4 (H1411) 10" Paper Cone from Madisound

btw, regarding the very big series resistor I mentioned fore the W2-800SL, it may not have been THAT big, because I also worked on a horn/CD combo, and I may have them mixed up a bit, but the actual resistor wasnt exactly small either

Default Thankyou

Thankyou to everyone who has contributed to this thread. I'm not suggesting it is at an end, but it has been extremely helpful, and in unexpected ways:

[1] I didn't know about the Seas 10". Actually I did, but I hadn't realised I'd actually already heard it, and been impressed. This was at a UK trade show, in the HiFi World room, where they were demonstrating one of their kit designs which used it. Very nice sound indeed. Why on earth isn't this woofer on the Seas website? Or maybe it is and I'm too old and stupid to find it...

[2] All the links you have provided to other related threads. With over 100,000 members, and goodness knows how many threads, it is a fantastic way to find out about what other people have already done with a particular driver or design approach.

On we go... Thanks again.

Could nice to try, for example with 8-10" wave guide.

True, though the Peerless is smooth, it does not have the midrange clarity potential of a small metal cone driver. Also, I don't recommend the smaller 8-10" WGs. Regardless of manufactures claims, even the 12" WGs have trouble holding directivity control at 1k.

Um... With the greatest respect, wave guides aren't where I want to take this project.

If you would like to look back at my first post, you will see that I want to make a classic 2-way direct radiating closed box system with reasonably high output capability.

The interesting bit is whether there are any big woofers which do what the classic 8 inch 2-way systems did, only more so.

I had identified two possibilities, but thanks to this thread there are three candidates now.

Has anyone got any other suggestions?

If you like the Seas 10, it's a good way to go. Great driver. And it can be run with no crossover!
See my buddy John's other speakers here.
Meet-Fall09
Scroll down and look for "John Busch".

It's a classic 2-way with premium drivers. The Seas 10 is not cheap, and the Revelator is darn expensive - but superb. With this combo you don't need to spend much on the crossover. Result is a very smooth, very musical speaker. Distortion is subjectively very low.

Have you heard Epos speakers? Many of older models consist only a cap on tweeter bass with natural roll off. Sounds very good, and not just to my ears.

W2 you don't really can't use with 10-12" because they are too insensitive.
