Default Opinions re Peerless vs Seas

I have a client for whom I will almost certainly be building a MTM(ob)WW

Two options for drivers present themselves..

opt 1. all Peerless : 810921 tweet, 2 x 832873 5" nomex + 2 x 830869 8" nomex

opt 2: 2 x Seas CA15RLY/TV 5" + 2 x CA22RNX + either the Peerless tweeter or one of the Seas tweeters.

Assuming similar pricing (Seas version may be slightly cheaper).. which option would you choose ??

It's a bit of a toss up, maybe you're client has some visual preference? Personally I think it would be a tough decision on sound quality alone.

The drivers chosen are both excellent selections, however there is a bit of information I can offer:

The Peerless 8" drivers need a large box, two of them may end up needing a very large box to reach the deep bass notes. Also, depending on where your crossover frequency lies, the 830884 doesn't have the dip at 800Hz, and has a bit larger xmax, so you may also want to consider the 830884.

The CA22RNX has larger xmax than the 830869, so that may be of some consideration. I'm not sure of the box requirements for the CA22RNX.

The Peerless (now Scan-Speak) tweeter is a great choice, absolutely astounding.

I had built myself a less ambitious project a few years back using the Peerless 830884 and 820921 in a two way tower, and still am in love with the sound today. When I was designing this speaker, I had the same toss-up between Seas CA and Peerless HDS, and chose the Peerless for visual appearance and the bass extension capable of the 830884.

Hope that helps your decision a bit. Good Luck!

DcibeL,

how big is your box for the 830884?

I would use the seas for bass duties (imho the peerless driver are more suited for midbass). Generally my experience is that the Seas tweeters (especially the prestige range) are performing worse than the Vifa/Peerless equivalents, so I would use the peerless tweeter.

The most difficult choice is the midbass, I'v only direct experience with the ca18rnx and the ER15RLY, and the 18 cm peerless exclusive. So that is a question I cannot answer.

I think 56 Litres, not that it matters. Download Unibox and run some simulations to determine the cabinet that works for your speaker.

The Peerless HDS tweeter was the choice for the Exodus Audio "Kepler" speakers based on the sound, unit to unit uniformity and way down the list of attributes...price.

Great tweeter at any price, but it's not too expensive to be on anyone's list of possible choices.

Best Regards,
TerryO
