Default Hi Vi d6.8, thinking about getting some

Hi all,

I was thinking about getting some HIVi 6.8's. I found a local guy who has some for sale. Living out here in the Dark Continent, the opertunity to get something resembling a good driver is fairly rare.

While they are being sold relativley cheaply, it is still a fair wack of cash for me, so before I jump the gun, does anyone have any experience with these drivers?

I have a set of tweeters that I will pair them with for a simple 2 way, using about a 12-14 liter box.

They would currently will be driven by a chipamp tda2050, but thinking of bi-amping using the LM1875.

It is used for near field listening, so loud is not a requirement. I am just looking for clean and clear.

Thanks

Travis

Hi Travis

There at least a few projects to be found on the net that use this driver (google "HIVi 6.8"). It is reportedly better than the Dynaudio driver it was based on.

What tweeters are you pairing them with?
And where are you located?

BTW, the price was very very good (I assume you bought these from Stuart..?). I was quite tempted to buy some, even though I don't actually need them.

HI Shaun,

Ya, looking to get them from Stuart, was very stocked that they were available localy, no shipping blues

The tweeters are from a pair of sony desktops I have that the main driver is a little fragged. Probably not the greatest tweeter around, but they seem Ok, and I can upgrade later if need be.

I am in Pietermariztburg, where a whole bunch of not much goes on

Thanks

Travis

To get the most from the HiVi 2-way you'll need a good tweeter and related crossover components. If you can afford it, I'd recommend buying a pair of the 6.8s and putting them away until you have saved up enough for a complete system. In the meantime, if you follow the discussion about the diy kit on AVforums.co.za, you'll pick up details of a tweeter and mid/bass unit that is quite cheap and available locally.

I would not recommend using this driver with a cheap tweeter. In my experience the perceived value of the better quality mid/bass will diminish with time, and you'll never build that nice 2-way that you could have. Sorry about the pessimistic viewpoint but, really, rather build a low-cost speaker than a mismatched system.

Shaun,

Hmmm... will have to think about that.I will definately be upgrading the tweeters in the coming months, so maybe I should wait before building.

Placed the order with Stu just now, so I have the speakers on the way, as you said the price was very good. Thinking I might be able to rustle up some nice tweeters for christmas, so we shall see. Any recomendations for tweeters availble in SA?

Travis

Audiosa has SEAS tweeters. The 27TDFC is very good.
