Large Format Concert Arrays

For large scale events, ie music festivals (Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Melt, etc), loudspeaker arrays are often used.

What are the traditional requirements for such arrays?

-How large of an area are they expected to cover? How large of a distance are they expected to produce appreciable SPL?

-Over what angles are they expected to produce sound (ie directivity)?

-How large of sound pressure levels are they expected to provide?

-Are there other circumstances where use of such an array would be desirable?

if you have any further information relating to requirements for large format concert arrays it would be much appreciated.

They are modular , so easier to move and to stack .
They are black , so thousand of people standing in front of them would look at them only if asked .
I would expect the same amount of paralleled devices in power amps.
