Default The Acoustic Nearfield

Let us suppose, we have 2 arbitrary sources (point, line, etc). They are sent the same signal, however they are separated by a particular distance.

How can we determine a qualitative relationship between the sources with respect to the nearfield? How large can the separation be (wrt wavelength) for them to behave as a single source in the nearfield? to sum constructively, <1/4 wavelength?

Thanks,
Thadman

that's a hard question.

I suspect that the answer depends on who's listening - is it a point microphone or a head with two ears separated by a distance ? [http://www.icad.org/websiteV2.0/Conf.../brungart.htm]
