Default How do you coat your boxes?

I coat mine with two compound polyurethane (white enamel) but can't get smooth surface, an orange peel is a problem. Have tried HP 1.4 and HVLP 1.7 tips with different pressures. I know it is easier with automotive paints but they are expensive and my box is made of chipboard with polyester filler - not worth extra lacquers.

I would try soft-coatings like Alexit and Nextels from Mankiewicz.de but as you see I can't learn even simple spraying.

What's your experience guys?

orange peel = not enough reducer or thinner

I'm reaching manufacturer maximum (20%). Isn't it simpler with acrylic urethane? Poly requires 12 hours between layers. I don't use oil compressor but have some water and just one fine grain filter before gun. Isn't it simpler with water base enamels?

You are using a hardener ? I wouldn't worry about going a little higher with the reducer, test it out with a small test shoot. Poly should be wet sandable in 6-8hrs. Water enamels are softer and don't have depth.

I'm using hardener (20%). Ok so here is my idea: 30% thinner, 1.4mm HP tip, 5 bar, wide flux and cross painting.

Sounds good, I have gone higher with the reducer, but it gets a little tricky.

Do you also sand your work? I'm so tired with hand sanding. Yato (former Toya) produces orbital random sander which consumes only 57 litres (2cfm) targeted to pro market.
