Default continuous and peak

Can anybody explain to me if i have this correct. I have a Yamaha EMX88s which had problems with clipping. Both the Behringer B215 passive speakers being used blew. I purchased these speakers as they were rated at 600watts and the the system i was using them with is rated at 400 watts if two speakers are used and 800 watts max if four speakers are connected.
I think i have found the reason why both speakers blew. The speakers are rated at 150 watts continous and 600 watts peak!! So i guess i am a doughnut and read this wrong. I have since purchased two Yamaha speakers matched to the amp which i should have done in the first place. I am in the process of replacing the blown woofers. But is this the reason why these speakers blew because they were being driven hard and were overloaded.
Thank you in advance

when clipping is involved speaker and amp power ratings start to be a bit meaningless.... Even if you have a speaker rated at 100W and an amp rated at say 60W if you clip it, you will likely blow the speaker. The clipped waveform looks more like DC to the speaker than a normal signal, speakers are not designed to work with DC!

In a lot of respects having an amp with much higher power rating than the speakers is less of a problem than having an amp with a lower power rating than the speakers, in that you are much less likely to run into clipping.

However obviously if you crank it too much the speakers will blow (even without clipping) if the difference in power is big enough.

Tony.

If you love loud, buy party speakers, they love it!

If you love music, buy Hi-Fi, and go easy on the throttle!

Regards, Mick.

Or go high efficiency and enjoy both

To the original poster, I would ignore "peak" power ratings.
