Default Indentification of Accusound drivers etc - help needed

Hi all

I have a bit of a problem on my hands and am hoping someone can help in some way....

Back in 2005 I purchased 3 DIY kits on ebay for Accusound speakers, model SS701 - I got a pair of mains, a centre and 4 surrounds. When the kits arrived they contained only the drivers, tweeters, crossovers etc but no documentation on cabinets. I dutifully downloaded the images and dimensions from the ebay listing and saved it to my PC. I then stored all the boxes and promptly forgot about them.

Sometime between 2005 and now my PC died a horrible death and I switched to a Mac. Unable to find the info I needed to build these boxes I went searching the internet to no avail and arrived here purely by chance. After alot of reading I now understand the importance of getting the cabinets right.

So I contact Accusound here in Australia and they point me to Audio Australia where I bought them from. Turns out they trashed all the details for this model a few years ago. So I go back to Accusound asking if I supply part numbers can they identify what the various parts are so I can figure out some cabinets. Well it turns out they were going to go back to Audio Australia and I have had no response since. I did manage to find the "specs" for the main boxes after some creative searching but nothing on the components themselves:

Model No.: SS-701m
Cabinet Type: Floor standing Speakers
Components: 2 x 8” Woofers, 1 x 1” Tweeter
Speaker Design: Bass Reflex
Speaker Terminals: Banana / Binding Post
Power Handling: 180w (RMS) Per Speaker
Impedance (see note): 8 Ohm
Sensitivity: 92 dB
Frequency Response: 30Hz – 21kHz
Recommended Dimensions (H x W x D) mm: (Using 16mm MDF) 1100x230x323

Heres what I have:

Mains
8” Woofer – P/N W0814-350-00 (2 per box)
1” Tweeter - P/N T008-0250-142 (1 per box)
3 way (?) crossover - P/N N201-237

Surrounds
4” Woofer – P/N W0406-0250-03 (1 per box)
1” Tweeter – P/N T008-0251-28 (1 per box)
2 way crossover - P/N N201-158

Center
4" Woofer - P/N W0412-0251-01 (2)
1" Tweeter - P/N T008-0251-28 (1)
Crossover - P/N N201-159

So, does anyone here happen to know of these speakers supplied by Accusound here in Australia? I am after, if possible, the data on them to enable new cabinets to be designed effectively. All of the drivers etc have nothing on the back, just a p/n sticker. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated....

Cheers
Bruce

I bought a set of those surrounds.

Surrounds
4” Woofer – P/N W0406-0250-03 (1 per box)
1” Tweeter – P/N T008-0251-28 (1 per box)
2 way crossover - P/N N201-158

From memory I used a 3 liter sealed box with some cheap polyfill.

I gave them away, i just thought the sound was thin and tinny ( blame the cheap tweeter )

Sealed boxes are very forgiving and bigger is usually better, if you make the box between 3 and 6 liters you should be OK

I'm guessing that the 3-way XO is a 2.5 set-up with a single inductor on 1 woofer, I'd try 40 to 60 liters or bigger for the 3-way, from a vague memory that those woofers had a high Qts, maybe 0.45/0.56 with a Vas of 40 liters ( I have vague memories of the specs but in my files I can only find the 12inch cheap woofer

Sorry I cannot help further, I actually expect suppliers to keep all file for at least 7 years or longer, don't you

... thats what I feared. When I bought them they were cheap and me not knowing, snapped them up thinking they were a "deal".

I got a reply from Accusound this morning and the "recommended" sizes they suggested were:

Fronts should be around 900mm high x 265mm wide x 295mm deep

Centre should be 550mm wide x 165mm high x 195mm deep

Rears should be 250mm high x 160mm wide x 195mm deep

Not sure what that is in litres but will work it out

No probs, you have actually been great help. I actually have the fronts drivers and tweeter in my old DM220 boxes and I thought the crap sound was just because the boxes were the wrong size.

I too would have thought that suppliers would keep info for a little longer than 2 or 3 years..... live and learn I suppose and buy established name brands in the future....

How close was I??

Thats 63liters for the fronts and 8 for the surrounds

Any pictures of the 8 inch woofers?? I have a memory of them being close to the Dick Smith ones, not bad bass but lousy midrange, find a decent tweeter and it is "Possible" that a reasonable 3way could be made up WWMTM style

Wow, that was a nice and close guess, you are WAY better at this than I am

I have attached pics of the drivers. The box looks pretty sad but they were never intended to stay like that, it was a "temporary" thing when the DM220 died along with my Denon receiver.

May be able to resurrect them you say, I like that idea. How about a pair of these tweeters?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....=STRK:MEWAX:IT

or these for the surrounds"

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AUDAX-shielde...d=p3911.c0.m14

Only problem is I would need to redesign the boxes and crossovers, something I am NOT up to speed with yet.

Cheers
Bruce

Or even using Jaycar 5" mid drivers and tweeters for a budget solution? The paper cone ones versus the kevlar ones....

I think those drivers were meant to be mounted the other way round, with the tweeter cut-out matching the round edge on the woofer.

Honestly do not like any of the current Jaycar line up except the paper cone 8inch woofer,

I would suggest cutting your losses and use a design that should work

Kit in Australia

Regards
Ted

Hmmm, I thought that might be the case.... would that have made any difference to the output?

Ah, OK. I have been sort of telling my wife that the kits weren't such good value after all. I'll take a look at the link and make suggestions to her....

I have plans to build some of the 1.618 set by Adam McCall http://diyaudioprojects.com/Speakers/Hi-Vi-3-Way-Tower/, I actually bought the drawings for them and the center. Just can't convince my wife the expenditure is worth it. Maybe the above link might give me some leverage to show her what a real speaker should sound like....

Thanks Ted for your help, my newbie-ness is slowly learning what I should and should not be doing.

Cheers
Bruce
