Default Need advice from the experts

Hi,

I'm in the market for a new pair of studio monitors. I'm going to buy off the shelf, but I'd love to get the input of people that actually know a thing or two about speaker design. Do you guys have any recommendations? I'm looking in the low budget area, sub $600.

On a side note, I did a quick analysis of price differences between KRK and Behringer (foreign prices converted at current exchange rates).

Behringer
US: 500/392 = Behringers cost 27% more here than in the US
UK: 500/443 = Behringers cost 13% more here than in the UK

KRK
US: 750/476 = KRKs cost 57% more here than in the US
UK: 750/719 = KRKs cost 4% more here than the UK

Now, being a commerce student, I'm thinking that KRK and Behringer would both have comparable economies of scale in production. I also assume they have equally skilled product engineers. Thus, I can only conclude that KRKs are brutally overpriced here and Behringers would give me more bang for buck. Is that a fair assumption?

On another note, these new Behringer monitors use ribbon tweeters. I have never heard good things about ribbons, other than the folded ribbons used by Adam. Are ribbons generally crap?

Thanks.

I've expanded my analysis a little bit further...

Behringer B3030A
US: 500/392 = 27% (cost 27% more here)
UK: 500/443 = 13%

KRK RP6
US: 750/476 = 57%
UK: 750/719 = 4%

Fostex PM1
US: 999/475 = 101%
UK: 999/597 = 67%

Yamaha MSP7
US: 1400/951 = 47%
UK: 1400/1694 = -17% (cost 17% less here)

Yamaha HS80M
US: 840/952 = -16%
UK: 840/779 = 7%

Dynaudio BM5A
US: 1695/1190 = 42%
UK: 1695/1656 = 2%

Adam A7
US: 1699/1367 = 24%
UK: 1699/1323 = 28%

Mackie HR624 MK2
US: 2399/1140 = 110%
UK: 2399/1244 = 92%

HS80M for the win?

How about a book first? (if the time allows)

It's recommended by Mr. Lynn Olson, and really worth reading, especially for a user of studio monitors.

The only monitors I've ever used are KRKs; I think they're excellent and well worth the money. Although they're probably a lot cheaper to buy in the US you should budget for the very high shipping costs (they weigh a ton!) and that you'll probably have to pay import duty.

Cheers

Chris
