The Duo-T are the best value I've done. They competed in and won the under $150/pair (drivers and crossover parts) at the Iowa DIY event last year. Actually pictured below is the Duo-S, which is the higher end version that uses a Scanspeak 5" woofer and Vifa D26NC55 tweeter. The Duo-T uses Tangband W5-704D woofer and Dayton ND28 neo tweeter.

Here is the judging results page for the under $150 category from IowaDIY2008. You can see the other competing speakers by clicking on the tabs at the bottom. http://home.mchsi.com/~iowadiy2008/Speaker_Ratings_superbudget.htm

Actually, Zaphs ZDT3.5 was there competing in the midrange class, I believe. Here are the results of that class: http://home.mchsi.com/~iowadiy2008/Speaker_Ratings_midrange.htm

For anyone interestd, here are the budget and unlimited results as well:

Hi all. Im just curious to know what you guys think is the best performance for value diy multiway speaker? Always curious to know peoples opinions on this because we all hear things differently so it will be interesting to see if theres a common denominator....
It depends how you define 'value'. Some good inexpensive designs have been mentioned, but at the lower $ end of the scale I can buy something excellent secondhand.

Where I see the real value in DIY speakers is trying to get the maximum performance for the best capital outlay, even if that's more than a $500 expenditure. Car analogy: I'd rather build a PRB Clubman than spend 4x+ on a Ferrari.

Wow they look really good!! I want them bad!! Haha this the trouble though. The list will always get bigger and bigger so where do you stop....never
Pick something you like and build it. Trust your gut here - something will speak to you and that's what you should go with.

I knew what I wanted, but I couldn't get the parts, so I looked at another idea, actually several. Then the parts became available and I'm building what I wanted in the first place. Choice 2 has taken a couple of variations, but is now going to be the rear/sides in the HT. It's over the top to some extent, but it should keep me content for some years.

Do you want more ideas? I can list several other sites with a variety of designs if you want.

150 us! I thought 400 us was good. The above speakers look good, but my other half wont approve. I showed her the photos and got a big fat ugly. The things we have to put up with!

Oh well, to each his own. I have had good reaction to them from spouses because of their diminutive size. They are only 7" wide and about 38" tall.

Yea what i shouldve done was gve a prce range. Ill do that now then. Lets say 350 us to 700. This still isnt really highend but id say average.

You might consider the Marcatos. They are a tower MTM using the Usher 8945P woofer and the B&G Neo3PDRW tweeter. They are in a transmission line cabinet (ML-TL) with F3 around 31hz as designed. They are designed and voiced to sit with the back of the speaker about 6" from the wall or so, are 10" wide, 12.5" deep and 45" tall in the ML-TL configuration. I believe the cost of drivers and crossover parts is around $660 or so for the pair.

They were shown at the InDIYana event in April and in the view of some of the participants were the best speaker. They are really excellent for the cost.

You can download a write-up that the designer, Paul Kittinger put together here. I did the crossover design for him on these.
