Cool Hi-eff two-way using Eminence Coax or not?

Hello all! Can anyone give an opinion on why a hi-eff two-way using the Eminence Beta 10cx or 12cx coax + compression tweeter would be better or worse than using a Beta 10 or Beta 12 + compression tweeter in a more conventional setup? I am intrigued to try this as my home speaker system but not end up with a PA sound. Or is this wishful thinking? I’m considering the Econowave setup using the Selenium d220 like many others have but open to other compression drivers and waveguides. A tech at Eminence seems to feel the coax speakers will sound better in a home environment but that’s his subjective opinion.

Also, has anyone used the Eminence Alpha 8 in an open back speaker with good results?

TIA,
Godzilla

I believe Adire Audio used to offer a kit with the 10-15" coax eminence drivers. I don't recall the name of their system, though. I may be able to dig it up when I get home as they did a review of them in Audioxpress a few years back.

Default Pretend they don't suck:

Need good drivers for 'copper' speaker cabinet

Or not:

Coax does have their advantages, sure
But it somehow seem to step on its own toes

You miss a proper waveguide big enough to get low
And you need to cross low with such a big midwoofer
To be able to cross low is also one of the few advantages I see with a compression driver

I would like to try the cheap Eminence Beta-8A
Or a nice AE woofer
But living in EU shipping and custom/vat is a hurdle
Without it I wouldnt think twice

And Im sure I would aim at an active design
But you no doubt need well behaved drivers to achieve what you want
May not need be expencive but more a matter of finding the "lucky" ones

I ended up deciding to use a big 18" woofer crossed at 800hz to a 1.4" CD
But didnt have the money

Thanks tinitus... that makes total sense to me.

motherone, i will be searching for the Adire articles and recall reading a few... thanks.

Thanks for the links Zilch. I already saw the first one and read thru it before posting my questions. Appreciate your time and effort on those charts. Can i ask how much you sell the Econowave kit for? My thoughts are more on the woofer/cabinet size to match with the Econowave.

I'd love to keep things simple. I also like the idea of an Altec 14 type speaker paired with my tube amp. The Econowave seems like a great solution for the top section.

Along with the Econowave type project i wanted to also consider open baffle. That's why i asked about the Alpha 8 in OB... an Alpha 8 simply mounted in a box with an open back with an Econowave on top plus proper woofers for the bass seems like an interesting 'audiophile' system to me... i would guess the Alpha 8 can manage 100hz this way but not sure.

Many thanks... suggestions are appreciated!

I don't; I only sell the blank PC boards, for $20 a pair.

The "Works" costs ~$200 from the suggested vendors, presently, including the boards....
