So I have a set of speakers/stands that i want to strip and refinish using MJL21193's method, SB urethane primer, rustoleum black then most likely varathane diamond WB poly.
The paint job on them now is SW oil based primer/color and a very unsuccessful brushed on lacquer top coat.. oh and the raw mdf was sealed with shellac. Any helpful hints on removing the current finish? besides lots of heavy sanding... |

I wouldnt sand to remove the last paint job... just to make thing smooth and ready adhere the next primer.
sanding > SW oil primer> sanding

Or you could use one of the many paint strippers available, and a scraper, being careful not to mar the surface.

About the paint strippers, thats kind of why i was asking. Is methylene chloride safe to use on mdf? Mdf is not the usual suspect so to speak. just dont go overboard i guess.

Why must the old paint be removed? It just adds more work and toxic stuff. FYI modern paint strippers use WATER as part of the removing/clean up process.

no real reason just me being neurotic.. I will check it out and if its too much work I will just flat sand it.
Just say no to water, thanks for the heads up. |

I agree about not removing the old, but Tech asked about stripping. The paint, that is.
