Should be ok. You might need to eq it a bit with a q of less than 1.

Eminence Alpha is better for OB, but the specs aren't too bad. Just don't expect much output below FS unless you room provides some gain for those frequencies.

Xmax would be useful to know too; if it's higher, more EQ can be used potentially.

Great!...It will work. many thanks,
It comes down to an equal price decision between this and an Eminence BETA 15 which would you choose please? (both available here) This ones SPL response looks a lot smoother, if it was tested accurately. Its supposed to be a bass guitar instrumental woofer. I've read varying opinions here about optimal Qts for OB. Is it true that high values give 'slow' bass and low values give 'tight' bass with 'slam'? Some say around 0.7 to 1 is best, hence my Q. re Qms, from wikipedia: "High Qms indicates lower mechanical losses, and low Qms indicates higher. The main effect of Qms is on the impedance of the driver, with high Qms drivers displaying a higher impedance peak." This one's Qms is lower than the Alpha/Beta15 and Selenium 15PW3. So I'm wondering if (one of) the consequence(s) is poorer efficiency? Guessing Xmax is 3-4mm? oops, too many questions! thanks again, Grant |

My guess is that it will be a lot like the Selenium 15PW3 once on a baffle. I used the Selenium 15PW3 for OB and liked them.
A smooth top end does help make the crossover easier and the Selem was nice in that respect. Have not heard the Beta 15. But both the Beta8 and the Beta12 LTA make excellent midrange drivers. Far better then their price or appearnce would indicate.

Thanks Pano,
You get around man! Moved from your Kihei paradise? The Selenium SPL plot looks good, but its too costly to import, ( 3mm Xmax? ) Eminence drivers seem to have great credibility. The other driver I mentioned could be dodgy in that its graph looks a bit suss, ie no Z. So I wonder how accurate its T/S params are. Yeah, Tinitus likes the Beta-8 as a mid, its smooth, but I want to cross to a FR, something like the new TBand W8-1808, but thats very expensive and unavailable as yet. |

Although I haven't tested this, I would expect bass guitar drivers to be below par for transients compared to a standard subwoofer driver.
Apart from that, the Eminence Alpha 15A has made a lot of OB fans very happy.

Grant, I've got a pair of 12" Jaycars I've no further use for if you want them, these:
I couldn't bear to throw them away... I'm running out of room... can drop them off next week(school hols) if you're interested, whereabouts in Sydney are you?

Grant that's an offer you can't refuse.
Don't worry about the poor power handling, most of the time we listen at around a watt anyway. You can always load the rear of the driver with a cheap poly doona from K-Mart Ted
