Hey guys, im thinking heavily now on building the popular ZD5 system. I have just a couple questions in regards to this.
First, these are going to be put in my bedroom for my entertainment setup (TV, computer, consoles, ect.) My question in regards to this is would sealed or ported be a better option. Keeping in mind i have NO sub, and likely wont have one for quite some time. 2. I notice the sealed version can be stand mounted in his PDF files. On the ported version he continues the size all the way to the floor, bottom closed off chamber sand filled for wieght/balance. Is there any reason in regards to sound integrity this is done? Or can the ported version also be stand mounted? Edit: One more thing. The driver and tweeter are not center with each other. When building a pair should this be mirrored? Also i've noticed a couple people do this to the back of the baffle http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/i...leScallops.jpg I was under ther impression his directions called for a a chamfer all the way around. |

Hello,
After checking the differences in the frequency response, I am sure you'll be happier with the ported version, especially if you have no sub and want to use them for entertainment. In my opinion, the sealed version would be good when used with a subwoofer or as surround speakers in a 5.1 system. You are asking if making a stand mounted ported version is possible. It is! You will have to use the same dimensions as the upper part of the floor stander version. It should be the same design, excepted that the sand filled chamber would not be there... The differences ? I think it will have to do with some vibration absorption. I guess only a trained ear could hear the difference, maybe... But, if you choose to modify the ported version, you will need stands. So, if you have the space, you should make the floor stander, including the sand filled chamber, as it is on the pdf... Yes, you'll have to mirror the driver arrangement. The reason for the chamfer discontinuity on your picture is to make the mounting area stronger. The discontinuities in the chamfer match with the mounting screw locations. (5 screws) |

I see, ill keep that in mind then. Part of the reason for wanting to make the ported stand mounted is so i can build 2 stands, sealed box and port box, and then just swap them off the stands as needed. Little less wood and i think stands look cooler. But i suppose it wouldnt kill me to just do it normal....
I was also thinking i could set up a type of brace in the ported box with a large sqaure in it, double layered with a bevel (like a speaker mounting bevel only sqaure). Have it set up to a size that very close to the sealed enclosure and then transfering from sealed to ported is nothing more than screwing in the plate of MDF that sits in the sqaure beveled slot (and plugging the port if its above the plate). Id imagine that should work anyways, thoughts? One last thing i just noticed, which XT25 is it? Madisound has 3 XT25 varients. And lastly, when implementing a stand alone sub to this system, is it possible to actively change the crossover on the ZD5 to something higher, say 300ish? Just for the sake of taking low end strain off them and letting the sub do the work once i aquire one. Or is that going to substantially mess with the passive work already done. I have Zero desire to redo any of the passive crossover network Zaph designed. Edit: Oh yes and as far as discontinuing the chamfer area for mounting strength, is that recomended? Would it be better to use a stronger material and do a complete chamfer? |
