Default DIY system with Seas Excel and Hiquphon?

Does anyone know of any DIY projects that have been done with the Seas Excel drivers and hiquphon tweets? Was looking to probably use w18, and OW1.

I was wanting to build a 2way with this system, or something very similar. My problem is I basically need major help in building a crossover, so I wanted to go with a posted tried and respected kit. If anyone knows of some please point me in the direction!

BTW I emailed Dave Ellis about the 1801b's already. Hes on vacation atm so I didnt get much but he was more or less saying he couldnt do a kit anymore or something? I think hes moving onto a new version using accutons mids.

Either way all i really need is a proven crossover design to mate the two speakers I end up choosing. Everything past that should be fairly simple for me.

Thanks!

Hi,

not a 18 but a 15 cm woofer (probably better integration with the 19mm Hiquphon):

I have a design using a W18EX and OW4. The catch is there is a waveguide involved.

One of the reasons the 1801B design was discontinued is that the Seas Excel W18 driver has changed. See: Ellis Audio forum. So if you find a crossover design, it may be for the old type W18 and not work very well with your new driver.

Yup i actually just figured that out shortly ago :P. I notice theres actually quite a few designs that might be out of date due to Seas excel driver changes so im rather weary of continuing on that path.

So instead I've been looking at those ZaphAudio ZD5's

First, run some simulations to obtain approximate enclosure dimensions, then design the enclosure, put the raw driver in it and listen and measure. This will show you the behavior of the driver when mounted in the specific enclosure. Then you can start designing the crossover. Seas has some design kits which you may use - they are published on their website.

The W18 has a strong breakup node starting at 3Khz which means you have to use steep crossover, notch to control the cone resonanse and to use a cut off freq. of maximum 1.3Khz. This woofer will also need an impedance compensation network. This will lead to a very compromising 2-way design and hard crossover design with a lot of parts in it. The driver is not very sensitive as well, 88db but at 2.83V.
I would suggest choosing a driver which is easier to work with, like the SS 18W ( at this price range ). The Excel will provide better resolution but weaker lowend output and will need a tweeter which could be crossed very low.
