best practices in building a crossover

I have been using active crossovers for a while now and I have dabble with building passive crossovers (copying others) but it would be cool to know what is the best way to build a crossover.

Im not talking about speaker measurements, values etc. I would like to have advice on the follow.

1. Best boards to use
2. Best wiring techniques, soldering advice
3. Best Layout (anything important to know about placement of any part).

There's a "how to" for crossover layout somewhere on parts express. Using just the material leads avoids having to decide on which $10/foot wire you need to use.

If you have experience etching PCBs, it can be quite convenient to etch something for crossovers. If it's a simple one, you can simply cut areas to separate them into thick traces. Faultless connections, that's for sure.
