Best is hard to say, and a matter of taste.

Squeeking in just at your budget limit, I"m very fond of the PAudio BM18CX38. It's a hell of a driver. Life size music comes out of this one.

Michael, do you anything about these 12" units, the 212-8A? Gives you the option of adding bass units later if needed and maybe just some EQ in the meantime. I think the 604's are a bit pricey.

The horn & woofer share a magnetic circuit? I'd want to see some data that says that driving one didn't produce output in the other.

I like the idea though. What were the old UREI coax's? 804s? I remember being impressed first hearing a pair of those.

must admit I've been tempted by these

but don't have time to play

edit> these aren't efficient - sorry OT

what sort of range of sensitivity are you looking for?
I guess you will use 8ohm impedance.

Preferable over 94 db/w.

The GPA 212-8A looks promising! Only thing that worries me is its short xmax (3 mm).

Don't know a lot. I think it's a Bill H. design. Good to see they finally have them for sale, they were "coming soon" for a long time. Would love to hear a pair. A 4.5 ft^3 box is no bookshelf speaker, but not bad for a real speaker.

Anyone know the price?
