I'm still fairly new to this game and am looking for a bit of advice.
These plans tick the boxes as the cabs are compact and loud, however I would like to use them for home listening (with a single sub) when not out on event use. Will only using a small fraction of their power handling sacrifice sound quality? This would probably be the nail in the coffin and I'll look to a lower power design. If this makes no difference to the audio then I'm going to get my hands on a DCX 2496 and play with different crossover types (working out beforehand which ones I can make with available components) as I'm unhappy with both the crossover having a lower power than the woofer (600W and 700W) and the slope\cutoff. What sort of power components will I need? I know nothing about power handling of inductors and I'll keep the voltage across the capacitors in check. For attenuating resistors what power is needed? Looking at commercial 600W jobs with supplied attenuation there is now way that the resistors can handle 600W, so what is the required percentage of this power for a xover around 1Khz? Thanks for any responses, I've come a bit unstuck here. Can't seem to find much info on high power passive xovers (I only want to use one amp). Tom |

Thanks mate, solved all my crossover questions in one fell swoop!
Is running a 700w driver at 100w going to degrade the sound quality significantly? Tom |

I would think that there would be lower distortion at low levels
(actually, at home listening levels you likely to be using only ~ 1 watt) PS, for reliability's sake, you should seriously consider going active & using 2 amps, you don't want your system to kark it in the middle of a gig...

I like to do my critical listening at loud volumes
I do seem to be swinging a little towards going active, I'll wait and see the complexity/number of components I'll need to do both sides. It may turn out that an extra amp may be worth the cost/time difference Thanks again |
